NTUC FAIRPRICE

NTUC FairPrice was first established in 1973 as NTUC Welcome Supermarket in Toa Payoh. The then prime minister the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew opened the supermarket at Block 192, Toa Payoh Lorong 4. It was the first market of its kind in Singapore. Today, most Singaporeans go to NTUC for daily grocery shopping.

YA KUN KAYA TOAST

In 1926, Hainanese immigrant Loi Ah Koon came to Singapore. Together with his wife, they began selling kaya toast at a coffee shop across where Hong Leong Building currently stands. In 1972, they moved to Lau Pa Sat but were made to move again. After Mr Loi Ah Koon's death, his son took over the business and expanded it locally and internationally.

SILKAIR

Formerly Tradewinds Airlines, SilkAir was originally an air charter company formed in 1976. It became a full-service airline in 1989 before rebranding itself as SilkAir in 1992. It currently flies to 50 international destinations in 11 Asian countries and Australia.

SINGTEL

In 1879, Bennet Pell started a telephone service in Singapore that 50 lines. The company was named in 1955 as Singapore Telecommunications Board. In 1993, the company went public. Today, it is one of the biggest telecomm providers in increasingly-connected Singapore.

CEDELE

Founded in 1997, Cedele has been making quality bread through traditional methods. In 1999, it opened its first bakery-café in the CBD to cater to office-workers. In 2004, it opened its first all-day dining restaurant. Today, it has shops in Singapore and Hong Kong.

SHENG SIONG

The Lim family that established Sheng Siong were originally farmers in Punggol. In 1984, they rented a small section of a supermarket in Ang Mo Kio. When the Government phased out farming the following year, Mr Lim Hock Yee and his brohers founded the first Sheng Siong store. Since then, they have at least 37 stores in Singapore.

TWELVE CUPCAKES

In 2011, Daniel Ong and Jamie Teo started Twelve Cupcakes . It was first opened at United Square Shopping Mall, in Novena.The chain cupcakery currently has more than 40 stores across Asia. The cupcakes are made to be less sweet than Western ones and are supposedly more suitable to the Asian palete.

EU YAN SENG

In the 1870s, founder Eu Kong Pai settled down in Ipoh from Foshan, China. He noticed that many tin mine labourers were addicted to opium and did now know its dangers. He then decided to open a medicinal hall for them. He expanded the business until his death in 1941 in Hong Kong. Since then, the company has been bought over by EYS Holdings.

STARHUB

Starhub was given the contract by the Government to provide telecommunication services from 2002 in 1998. It was publicly listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange in 2004. Since then, it has had close competition with SingTel to provide telecomm services.

AYAM BRAND

Alfred Clouet , a French citizen, founded Ayam Brand in 1892 in Singapore. Clouet took on a local word for the name of the brand, making the branding indigenous to the region. In 1954, the company was taken over by the Denis Frères Group of Companies. It sells sardines, tuna, coconut or baked beans, while Ayam is a brand for cooking ingredients in Asian cuisine markets like Australia, New Zealand, France or United Kingdom.
